Miles of Hope! Mizen to Malin Fundraiser

Revving up for the journey of a lifetime, Co Wicklow sheep farmer, Michael Keegan, will take to the wheel of his vintage tractor this August to drive between Mizen Head and Malin Head in aid of suicide prevention charities 3TS & Pieta.

Beginning on Friday 21st August at Mizen Head, Michael will complete the near 700 km journey aboard a 1964 Deutz D40L tractor which his Grandfather, Charlie Keegan, drove when he won the 1964 World Ploughing Championships - the first World Ploughing title ever won in the Republic of Ireland.

With a planned route running through many small towns and villages, Michael hopes to raise as much awareness and funds for suicide prevention along the way.

Michael will be accompanied by farmer & businessman, Tony Killarney, who helped Michael restore the tractor for its 50th anniversary. Hailing from Galway, Tony is a classic tractor & car collector and will drive his own 1971 Chevy pick up as a support vehicle along the route.

Speaking about this marathon challenge, Michael said:

 “Sadly, suicide continues to be a tragedy that is all too common in rural farming communities.  My main aim is to raise awareness about the help available for anyone who finds themselves in a crisis.  We will be encouraging people to take the first step and talk to someone if they're feeling suicidal,  highlighting the valuable help that exists for everyone through Pieta and the practical  training and resources available through 3Ts.

I also believe that help starts in the community and my hope is that this activity encourages everyone to be open to the idea of speaking about suicide if they’re in trouble or to find out more about how they support someone who is very low or in a crisis.

I’m looking forward to meeting lots of people as we spread our message of help and hope and showcasing our very special vintage Deutz tractor (& Tony's Chevy!) to the many tractor & classic truck enthusiasts plus the general public along the way."
