3Ts call for a Suicide Prevention Authority

Have you signed our petition yet?

In late 2012, 3Ts launched a campaign calling for a Suicide Prevention Authority to tackle the issue of Suicide in Ireland. The campaign has gained considerable following both on social media and in the press and through petition signatures.

For 10 years, 3Ts has been calling for improved Suicide Prevention Resources in Ireland. We currently have 3 times more people dying by suicide than die on our roads.

The final weeks of 2012 have seen a number of tragic suicide deaths reported in the media, with the result that suicide is very much is the spotlight as we enter the new year. Countless families in Ireland had their lives torn apart by suicide during 2012, the deaths of their loved ones largely unreported, but the devastating effects on their families, friends and their wider community, no less impactful and long-lasting.

3Ts believes that 2013 is the time the formation of a Suicide Prevention Authority will offer a real opportunity to provide the adequate funding, resources and attention required to help reduce deaths by suicide in Ireland.

We need your support to be heard.

Why?

Watch our campaign video to learn more…..

We have called on successive Governments to establish a dedicated Suicide Prevention Authority but we need your help to be heard.

Please help us to do this.

Dublin based, Galway Girl, Colette Hynes is the inspiration behind a group of friends who joined forces to raise a whopping €14k for 3Ts over the course of the past year.

Hatching a plan with her buddies at The Oarsman Pub in Ringsend and with the support of Cycle Superstore, Colette first mobilised (literally) a team of pals to not only take up cycling but to take on the challenge of doing the Ring of Kerry Cycle in July last year. Keeping with the Cycling theme, Colette then organised a SpinAThon in her local Gym under an expert (and very bossy!) Spinning Master. Again, 30 hard core fundraisers (and we mean hard core – this was PUNISHING work), donned their 1Life t-shirts and took to the spinning bikes in a confined and very hot space to raise funds for the charity through their blood, sweat & tears, spinning non-stop for 3 hours.

Along the way, and all the while with the support of the team at the lovely Oarsman Pub, Colette organised raffles & coin collections, persuaded friends to hold fundraisers and raise awareness, solicited fantastic prizes from generous sponsors, both in Dublin and in her native Galway, whilst holding down a day job, studying her accountancy exams, maintaining an enviable social life and looking super glam and fab all the time too! It’s exhausting just saying all that…

We have no doubt that the actions of Colette & her friends have helped to raise awareness of the work of 3Ts and the help that is available for anyone in need through the 1Life Helpline. Thanks for all your hard work, Colette!

Lar takes on the 2013 SPAR Great Ireland Run….Sure it’s just a walk in the Park to him…..

What this all about?

3Ts have a new Champion in Tipperary man, Lar Phelan, who has taken to the punishing world of Ironman training AND the blogosphere to help raise awareness around Mental Health & Suicide in Ireland.

We all know the benefits that physical exercise & a healthy diet bring to our mental health. Magazines, newspapers, tv, radio & the internet are awash with dietary advice, some sensible, some less so. We can’t step out the door these days without being ploughed down by a string of cyclists in hi-viz lycra snaking up the road or being overtaken by yet more lycra pounding the pavement in neon trainers as we carry our shopping up the hill. Are you someone who secretly looks with envy at these super fit individuals (and in some cases, not so fit but giving it a go regardless) and thinks, “I could never do that?”

Well, Lar Phelan, decided to supplement his usual sporting activity with his local GAA club and chose not just to go for a run, but to tackle the ultimate challenge, the Ironman competition and thus was born his website & blog, www.ordinarymanironman.com.

Lar is currently training for the Ironman race in Southern France in June, and along the way has completed a marathon, a number of 10ks, done a leg of the Cycle Against Suicide, and taken his swimming abilities to a whole new level, all the while battling injury and keeping up with his studies in UCC. Lar also created a website, and maintains a regular Blog combining elements of his busy life, sporting, college, social & personal, with contributions from an expert Nutritionist and tips on training to champion level from Irish 800m Champion & Olympian, Thomas Chamney. Lar posts updates, training plans, successes & failures.

For anybody interested in starting out or looking to make a small change , there will be content on nutrition, cycling, running & swimming to get you on the road to meet your challenge .

Having already survived testicular cancer and taken a change in career path by returning to studies in UCC, Lar hopes that now, by sharing his own experiences present & past, by being open about what has affected him, that he might help & inspire others to share their experiences or look for help when its needed.By telling his own inspiring story and mapping his journey, Lar hopes to tell readers about his own journey and how talking with friends, colleagues or family has helped along the way through all aspects of life and, most importantly to Lar, raising awareness about Mental Health along the way.

Despite his website’s name, Lar is no ordinary young man!

Visit Lar’s website here.

The second annual Bonny Baby Spring Fair takes place at Mountrath on 27th April next. Last year’s fair was a great success raising over €4,000 for 3Ts & 1Life. It is hoped to raise even more in 2013 through various fundraising activities including a charity auction, for which donations are now being welcomed, plus three brave men have volunteered for a head & beard shave.

The Fair is open to both pedigree & commercial calves, is the only spring fair of its kind in Ireland, with a total prize fund of €6,250. Organised by David Wharton, of Dromoyle, Birr, the fair will stage a total of 25 classes and 3 Young Handler classes. Pedigree classes will incorporate special Charolais, Limousin, Belgian Blue, Parthenaise & Blonde D’Acquitaine classes while commercial classes are open to young calves from 100 – 250kgs plus January & September 2012 born calves.

Following the Benefit Night at the Derby House Hotel in Kildare Town on Saturday 6th April, Sharon Hennessy & Daniel Sweeney have a current total of €23,000 raised in aid of 3Ts.

The energetic pair have encouraged their friends and family to sky-dive to raise funds for 3Ts. A group of wonderful women also signed up for Kildare’s Biggest Loser, with the winner losing a total of 2 stone since starting only a couple of months ago. The Michelle Hennessy Benefit Night was a very special event, with fantastic music and great craic, but also a very moving and powerful Remembrance Ceremony, where Daniel & Sharon remembered family members and loved ones belonging to some of those gathered on the night, not least Sharon’s own beloved twin Sister, Michelle.

Daniel & Sharon are still receiving donations online and from sponsors. You can donate online through the dedicated mycharity.ie page here.

Our sincere thanks to Daniel & Sharon, and to all their sponsors and supporters, all their friends, family and the community who came out in force on Saturday night but who also took the leap of faith to sky-dive or pounded the pavements and adopted a healthy eating plan to lose weight. You’re an inspiration to us all.
